Create space to have difficult discussions

Discussion of controversial topics

Research shows that when young people take part in structured, high-quality discussions about controversial issues, they become more interested in current events, more confident in addressing difficult topics, and better at listening to and negotiating different viewpoints. Yet most young people rarely have opportunities to engage with polarizing issues in ways that are safe and constructive.

HUM resources offer strategies and activities to help structure discussions on authentic, challenging topics. These strategies emphasize respect, promote understanding, and build empathy, while also reducing the risk that the discussion becomes unproductive or harmful.
